Academic Team

Description:
The Academic Team practices and competes every two weeks on Thursdays in a “Jeopardy” type Quiz Bowl competition. Questions range from math, science, history, literature, grammar, and current events to sports, movies, and TV. The EMS Academic Team competes after school against each other as well as several competitions against EMS teachers. The Academic Team will also be competing in two different online competitions later in the school year. The club runs from October through June.

Art Club

Description:
The objective of the EMS Art Club is to provide an extra curricular activity for those students who enjoy and/or excel in the visual arts area. Activites include both individual and group projects that are not addressed in the EMS art curriculum due to time or budgetary constraints.

Builders Club

Description:
This club is a middle school equivalent to Kiwanis or Key Club. Students work on community service projects such as Hunger Walk, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Peanut Butter & Jellly Sandwiches for a local shelter, Pet Food Drive, Cards for Nurse Homes, etc.

Chess & Strategic Gaming

Description:
Do you love chess and other strategic thinking games? Then come on down to Chess & Strategic Gaming Club! It’s the perfect place to meet others who love the game of chess, and increase your abilities of strategic thinking. Playing Chess promotes brain growth by exercising both sides of your brain! It can also raise your IQ, help teach planning and foresight, increases problem-solving skills, and improves memory. That’s a lot of benefits from just one game.We also play a simplified version of Dungeons & Dragons, and can accommodate other tabletop games (board, card, video) pending advisor approval.

Equal Rights Advocacy Club (ERAC)

Description:
Participating students will create, plan, and fund-raise for the events/field trips promoting an inclusive learning environment. I.e. Touring the Tibetan Buddhist Learning Center, Temple, and/or Mosque, Trip to the Apollo and/or Paul Robeson Cultural Center, Roxbury’s Juneteenth Celebration, Inclusivity Day (A day that commemorates people of various cultures, religions, and ability levels).

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

Description:
The FCA's mission is to engage others in God's love, equip them to grow in that love, and empower others to do the same. Participants will engage in activities and missions that model the club's core values of Integrity, Service, Teamwork and Excellence. Examples include morning and after school meetings, volunteerism, and supporting local fundraising efforts.

Intramural Sports

Description:
EMS Intramurals offers various sports and games including flag football and dodgeball.
Note - Students are NOT required to complete sports forms and annual physicals as they would for inter-scholastic sports to particpated in Intramurals. As long as they are eligible for PE class, they are eligible for this club.

Newspaper Club

Description:
The Newspaper Club is a club that publishes the EMS Newspaper, that is the place to go for EMS and community news. Meetings will be held twice per month, please see below for meeting times. Editorial & design staff may be required to attend an additional session prior to each publication deadline. The dates for these meetings will be determined as needed. Regular attendance and online check-ins are KEY for the publication to be released in a timely manner. This is an exciting opportunity for your child to have a forum in which to communicate with peers and community members, the issues and events relevant to the lives’ of middle school children.

Ski & Snowboard Club
Advisor(s):

Description:
The purpose of the Roxbury Community School's Ski and Snowboard Club is to provide students the opportunity to ski and/or snowboard at local mountain resorts. Students will be provided with transportation to and from the mountains. Students will be required to attend meetings, return all necessary forms, and pay a fee for transportation/chaperones. Ski packages will be purchased directly from the mountain. Students in grades 5-12 are welcome to join.
- The Roxbury Community School Ski/Snowboard Clubs are supervised by adult advisors and chaperones on the bus and the slopes.
- Comfortable charter buses with DVDs are used for the trips.
- Skiing and Snowboarding are both available in the clubs.
- Helmets are mandatory in all clubs.
- Wrist guards are mandatory for snowboarders.
- Enrollment is first come, first serve until the bus is filled. Enrollment is strictly limited.
- Registration is a two-part process. Families need to register and pay with the Community School first. Families will then receive an email with club login information and must register with the mountains to purchase ski packages online.
