Roxbury High School's jazz program consists of two performing groups based on the level of student experience. The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Ryan Sweer, is an auditioned group comprised of our more advanced or experienced jazz players. The Big Band, directed by Mr. Jeff Conrad, is open to any student with an interest in playing music in the jazz idiom. Both groups are offered the opportunity to lplay music in the styles of jazz, funk, rock and latin, as well as experiment in improvisation. Members of the jazz program participate in performances for the school and local community, as well as have the occasional opportunity to travel to jazz festivals and competitions. Auditions into the program are held in mid-November each year. Wind-instrument players must be part of the curricular band program to participate, however we welcome any student with a background in piano, bass, guitar, or drums! Please reach out to Mr. Sweer with any questions regarding the Jazz program at RHS.
