The district has put together easy guides to help parents become more aware of what their son/daughter will learn at each grade level. The guides are meant as a snapshot, and if a parent would like a more comprehensive view, he or she should reference the district curriculum.

Why are decodable texts used?Decodable texts help students build the neural connections they need to read fluently and automatically.They help students learn to blend and segment sounds, and develop their knowledge of the alphabetic code.They help students move from decodable texts to more authentic literature.What do decodable texts look like?They contain words that use regular phonics elements, like CVC words with simple vowel phonemes.They increase in complexity as students learn more of the phonetic code.They are often presented in books, short texts, words, phrases, or sentences.How are decodable texts used in the classroom?Teachers can read the text before students read it, and ask questions to build excitement and engagement.Teachers can encourage students to point to each word to help them track the blending of letter sounds.Teachers can help students when they make mistakes, and encourage them to re-read the sentence.
