As technology, communication and business continue to globalize many aspects of our lives, mastering a second language is an increasingly valuable skill. The World Languages Department seeks to provide students with a holistic approach to learning that brings together the four principal domains of language: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In doing this, the department seeks to not only build skills and increased fluency in a student's chosen world langauge, but also to develop greater cultural competency.

Beginning in grade 7 at Eisenhower Middle School, a student may choose to begin a full year program in French, Italian, or Spanish. As of the 2021-22 school year, a full sequence of study is available in grades 7-12 for each of the three langauges. The State of New Jersey has mandated a minimum of 5 credits (one year) of world language study at the high school level as a graduation requirement for all students. Many colleges require a minimum of three sequential years of world language study in high school. Two and four year colleges almost always look for more than two years. Ultimately, it is the World Langauges Department's goal for students to maximize their study of their chosen world languages and to be able put their language skills to use in practical and tangible ways in real life. 

Since the 2016-17 school year, the New Jersey Department of Education has offered the Seal of Biliteracy Program. Students achieve the seal by demonstrating proficiency in English and one or more world languages. Roxbury students are afforded the oportunity to demonstrate said proficiencies in a world langauge during their junior and/or senior years of high school by acheiving a score of at least "Intermediate Mid" on each of the four langauge domains on a test approved by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Guidelines. Seal tests are made available to students in January of each year in not only the three world languages offered by the Roxbury Public Schools but also in dozens of other langauges in which students may have skills.  English proficiency is measured by meeting high school English language arts graduation requirements or by attaining the appropriate cut score on the ACCESS for ELLs assessment (for English Language Learners). Students who attain this distinction will receive an NJDOE-issued certificate and transcript notation indicating the receipt of the Seal of Biliteracy.
