Roxbury Schools supports the Trex Recycling Challenge! Roxbury Schools has partnered with Trex to help promote their NexTrex Programs in an effort to reduce the amount of plastic bags, film, and wrap in the solid waste stream. Trex recycles #2 and #4 plastic bags and film such as plastic Amazon mailers, bubble wrap, plastic case wrap, dry cleaner bags, cereal and bread bags, and newspaper sleeves and turns it into decking and furniture.

We have teamed up with the Trex Company for the NexTrex Recycling Community Challenge that will run from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024. During this time, we will have collection boxes located at each of the following locations:

• Franklin Elementary School (8 Meeker Street, Succasunna, NJ)
• Jefferson Elementary School (35 Cornhollow Road, Succasunna, NJ)
• Kennedy Elementary School (20 Pleasant Hill Road, Succasunna, NJ)
• Nixon Elementary School (275 Mt Arlington Blvd, Landing, NJ)
• Lincoln/Roosevelt School (34 N Hillside Avenue, Succasunna, NJ)
• Eisenhower Middle School (47 Eyland Avenue, Succasunna, NJ)
• Roxbury High School (1 Bryant Drive, Succasunna, NJ)
• Roxbury Special Services & Community School (25 Meeker Street, Succasunna, NJ)
• Roxbury Transportation Department (3 Bryant Drive, Succasunna, NJ)

If we collect 1,000 lbs of plastic during this time, the Trex Company will donate a Trex bench to our community. 

As you may recall, New Jersey implemented a plastic bag ban in May 2022. Plastic bags and film packaging are important durable and lightweight protection for food and merchandise in transit. But these materials SHOULD NOT be recycled in most curbside carts or single stream programs. Thankfully, many grocers and retailers and some communities provide specific collection bins for bags and film to be recycled separately from other recyclables.

VIDEO - School and Community Recycling Programs Give Plastic Film New Life  

Each Roxbury Township Public School is registered with Sustainable Jersey for Schools, a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time. Launched in fall 2014, they are a non-profit organization that provides tools, training, and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs. Click here to read more about Sustainable Jersey for Schools. 

As of August 2018, all seven Roxbury schools received Bronze-level certification. In August 2023, Roxbury High School reached the next tier, achieving Silver certification. To that end, each of our schools and the district as a whole continue to work towards a more sustainable future.

By collaborating with the NexTrex Recycling Challenge, each of our schools will be earning five points towards the "Recycling Non-Mandated Materials" action. We will weigh and record each school's donations on a monthly basis and report back their totals. Each school's poundage will go towards a collective 1,000 lbs. • Roxbury High School - 5.82 lbs collected

Poundage collected at the district offices and from Roxbury Recycling will be divided evenly and dispersed amongst each of the seven schools.
