Roxbury's Anti-Idling Initiative
-
Since the 2018/2019 school year, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has worked on cutting down on the idling of our school vehicles and we encourage our families and communities to join us in this effort.
The Roxbury Transportation Department has already started. The department installed Zonar V4 Connect tablets in the majority of our fleet and all of the Transportation staff have been trained to use this software. Zonar will help us track our vehicles with time and service logs, pre and post-trip inspections, as well as monitor fuel efficiency and idling times. The department also made the decision beginning the 2018/2019 school year to run older buses on the shortest routes and the newer buses on the longer routes to provide mileage equalization in the fleet over time, efficiency, and a more healthy environment for our students, staff, and community.
The Roxbury Board of Education is also taking a pro-active approach to reducing the idling times by passing a board resolution on January 28, 2019, in support of No Idling at District Schools. Click here to view the extract of minutes for this resolution.
Dr. Loretta Radulic, our Superintendent of Schools has renewed Roxbury's No-Idling Pledge. With this pledge, we pledge to protect the health and well-being of the students and staff of our school district. We recognize that buses are the safest mode of student transportation, yet excessive school-bus emissions of soot from idling are a threat to children's health. To protect students and staff from harmful soot, we voluntarily pledge:
- To turn off engines while waiting to load and unload students
- To use the newest buses for the longest routes
- To maintain buses to eliminate any visible exhaust
- To complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
